Fenesta National Championships: Niki and Sowjanya crowned winners

first_imgIt was a glorious afternoon for Niki Poonacha and Sowjanya Bavesetti with their hands on silverware after they were crowned winners at the Fenesta National Championships here on Saturday.Nikki lived up to his top billing to lift the men’s singles crown but not before a buoyant Aryan Goveas took him to a tie-breaker in the second set. It can be good or bad as both of us don’t have an idea about each other’s game. The idea was to play your best and adapt to the situation accordingly, he added.In the second set, it was Aryan who took the lead, breaking Niki in the very first game, only for Niki to return the favour in the sixth. Niki had an opportunity to seal the issue but he failed to capitalise on a match point, forcing the set into the tie-breaker.advertisementAryan committed three straight unforced errors, last one handing Niki his maiden National championship title.In the women’s singles final, Sowjanya was up against veteran and four-time champion Prerna Bhambri. The first set was still a good fight top seed Sowjanya getting the big break and went into the lead. She carried the momentum in the second set to eventually seal the match with a 6-4, 6-2 verdict.Prerna took a break for her marriage and has been slowly getting back in to the action. Perhaps, she could have hit more balls, so of course there are few areas of improvement.
