Regional Marines in Sync

first_imgBy Dialogo January 01, 2012 Marine leaders from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay and the United States participated in the 2011 MLAC. Leaders agree that this type of collaboration is key for security cooperation. Brigadier General Héctor Julio Pachon Cañón, commandant of the Colombian Marine Corps, told Diálogo that during the MLAC conferences “joint and combined strategies are designed and integrated to combat transnational crimes that affect the entire hemisphere.” General James Amos, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, told Diálogo, “Standing alone, none of us has all the answers to these complex challenges, but together we can combine our unique experiences for the mutual benefit of all.” The 2011 MLAC also addressed common security threats, such as narcotrafficking in the region, which extends beyond producer countries to the entire region, taking the form of violence and shadow economies that undermine economic growth. “We all agree that narcotrafficking is simply a threat that does not respect borders,” Peruvian Admiral Luis Ramos Vargas said. “It [narcotrafficking] does not limit itself to Peru, Colombia and Bolivia; all of the countries in the region end up becoming transit countries, places where the drugs are stashed in order to then be transported to Europe, the United States and Asia.” More than 5.7 million people in the Western Hemisphere are affected by natural disasters each year. Within the region that encompasses the Caribbean, Central America and South America, approximately three-quarters of the population are estimated to live in at-risk areas for health disasters, and one-third lives in areas highly exposed to hazards such as earthquakes and landslides. Adding to these threats, each country within the region also faces the impact of narcotrafficking. These dangers call for Marine Corps assistance that, at times, involves several countries’ forces working together. Integrating multiple Marine Corps units to confront these diverse challenges cannot take place for the first time after a disaster or in the midst of a hunt for a narcotrafficking group. That is why the region’s Marine Corps have regular meetings at all levels to collaborate on sharing information and training. Marine Leaders Meet Marines have a long history of working and training together to mitigate natural disaster conditions and the threat of narcotrafficking in the region. Since 2001, top-ranking Marine leaders have gathered every two years for the Marine Leaders of America Conference (MLAC), a relationship-building forum in which commandants discuss issues of common regional concern. During the last MLAC, held August 29 to September 2, 2011, in Lima, Peru, Marines discussed techniques and lessons learned from peacekeeping operations, humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations. center_img Although regional Marine Corps have varying missions, the qualities inherent in Marine units assist greatly in providing security and augmenting the forces of the counterdrug authorities in the region. “The Marine Corps are very flexible units for their capability to deploy quickly, and can be a very useful tool for states,” said Captain Gerardo Priguetti, commandant of the Uruguayan Marine Corps. In Colombia’s case, working alongside other components of the National Navy, “[Marine Corps units] shows tangible results such as the interdiction of great quantities of liquid and chemical compounds used for the production of cocaine, as well as the confiscation of several tons of cocaine hydrochloride ready to be imported to other countries,” said Brig. Gen. Pachon Cañón. “This [conference] allows us to see, to open our minds to the realities of other Marine Corps,” said Capt. Priguetti. “These meetings allow us to help and to see different viewpoints to common problems.” Across Ranks Marines across Central America, South America and the Caribbean are going a step further, by also having a meeting among the senior enlisted leaders to consolidate their efforts against these security threats. Marine Corps senior enlisted leaders representing Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and the United States met for the first time ever from April 4–7, 2011, at the Senior Enlisted Marine Leaders of the Americas Conference (SEMLAC) at the Círculo de Suboficiales military base in Bogotá, Colombia. SEMLAC is set to become a regular event, conducted at various locations throughout Central and South America, to forge strong relationships working toward regional security. The event was co-hosted by the Marine Corps of Colombia and the U.S. to provide senior enlisted leaders a forum to discuss regional security cooperation and training against the region’s threats. The meetings of Marine Corps leaders have provided multiple benefits in military collaboration: Professional exchanges among naval infantry forces in the region have increased, Marine Corps training programs have improved as a result of the collective lessons learned, and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) has received enhanced naval infantry support. Polish star hails Keane record

first_img The 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund hitman is the star of the Polish side and will represent a major threat to Martin O’Neill’s men as the Ulsterman and counterpart Adam Nawalka each take charge of a second game for their respective countries at the INEA Stadium in Poznan on Tuesday evening. Nawalka suffered a 2-0 defeat by Slovakia in Wroclaw on his big night on Friday, while Ireland handed O’Neill a 3-0 victory over Latvia at the Aviva Stadium. He said: “Naturally, we will approach the friendly against Ireland with a lot of faith. We want to regain the trust of our fans. “Our preparations have been tailored to this very game. We wanted the players to recuperate physically after the game against Slovakia, and we have to eliminate the mistakes from the last game. “I would especially like to point out some of the mistakes committed by our defenders. It was those errors which made us lose control of the game because until the 15th minute we were pretty much in control. But later on, things got out of hand. “For the last few days, we have mainly worked on the mental side of our players. Everybody is looking forward to the game and getting a good result, not only for the fans but for the players and the coaches.” Poland’s chances of doing just that could depend largely on how Ireland cope with Lewandowski, who scored in a 3-2 friendly victory over the Irish at Croke Park in November 2008. He will at least be on familiar turf having made his name at Lech Poznan and scored a double for his country at their stadium against the Ivory Coast in November 2010. Lewandowski said: “I spent two wonderful years here with a lot of success and I have always wanted to come back here, so this is especially pleasurable for me. “I hope the stadium will be as lucky for me as it was when I played with Lech Poznan, and also against the Ivory Coast, there was a friendly game some time ago here and I scored a number of goals.” As so often in the last 15 years, it was 33-year-old Keane who opened the scoring on the night to take his tally to 62 senior goals, and the magnitude of that feat is not lost on Lewandowski. He said: “I believe that the statistics are really impressive. Sixty-two goals scored for the Irish squad is really an impressive figure. “I know that Keane has played for the Irish squad for so many years and we know they are very strong. “But we don’t want to concentrate on an individual player. We know they have very good individuals in the team, but we have to focus on how we are going to play. “When we focus on what we need to do, we will know how to implement what the coaches have been telling us to do on the pitch. “If the squad plays well, each individual player has an easier job.” Nawalka, who replaced Waldemar Fornalik following his failure to take the Poles to next summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil, blamed defensive frailties for his side’s defeat by the Slovakians. However, he remains convinced the players he has selected and the strategy he has employed will ultimately pay dividends. Poland striker Robert Lewandowski has hailed Robbie Keane’s international scoring record as he prepares to face Ireland. Press Associationlast_img read more

PLANS TO CREATE 300 JOBS IN WEST DONEGAL ANNOUNCED

first_imgÚdarás na Gaeltachta today announced that it is to support the creation of 300 new jobs on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park over the next 3 years. It also stated that 80 new jobs have been approved recently for the Business Park and will be coming on-stream in the near future. The agency is to invest a total of €4.7 million over the next 3 years on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park to support further enterprise development, employment creation, and carry out a capital redevelopment programme on a number of its properties. An action plan, presented in the Enterprise Development on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park report, launched today, sets out a programme that aims to attract employment creation opportunities to the Business Park. The Report was produced by the Fóram Forbartha Fiontraíochta, an interagency working group, set up by Údarás na Gaeltachta as an immediate response to the announcement by Largo Foods in March 2014 that it was to cease manufacturing in Gaoth Dobhair and transfer all its operations to its manufacturing facility in Ashbourne, Co Meath, resulting in the loss of 146 jobs. The purpose of the Fóram was to propose solutions and make recommendations that would lead to new enterprise development and job creation opportunities on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park.Údarás na Gaeltachta’s CEO, Steve Ó Cúláin, said that the report highlighted a number of challenges for enterprise development in the area and added that Údarás was confident that the level of employment on the Business Park would grow over the next few years. Steve Ó Cúláin said, “We welcome the Fóram’s report and the analysis, findings and recommendations contained within. An tÚdarás will prioritise its resources and put in place a programme aimed at attracting new enterprises to locate on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park. We are also pleased to announce that, during the term of the Fóram’s work, five new projects have been approved for the Business Park. These enterprise projects will lead to the creation of 80 new jobs, some of which are already in place and the remainder are planned to come on stream over the next 2 years. We are encouraged that three new start-up businesses are locating on the Business Park, and that further development is planned by two companies already located there, Euroflex Teo and Fáisc Miotail.”Séamas Mac Eochaidh, Chairperson of the Fóram and Enterprise and Employment Manager with Údarás na Gaeltachta, thanked all the members of the Fóram for their input. He said that the report, “highlights a number of sectors that should be targeted as most appropriate for sustainable job creation enterprises in Gaoth Dobhair, when all factors such as fit-for-purpose and sector-targeted enterprise facilities, location, infrastructure, labour supply is taken into consideration.”He said that one of the main sectors that Údarás na Gaeltachta was presently targeting was the food-sector, due to the availability of a high-grade food production facility on the Business Park and the level of skilled people with experience in this sector living locally. He gave the example of two of the new start-up enterprises, Bia Beo Natasha Teo and Kombucha Éireannach Teo, both operating in the food sector. These companies will be located in the building previously occupied by Largo Foods as their development plans are implemented. He stressed the importance of the companies currently operating on the Business Park, the employment they provide and the need to continuously support their operations and any further expansion plans they may have. The report has been welcomed by Minister of State, Deputy Joe McHugh.PLANS TO CREATE 300 JOBS IN WEST DONEGAL ANNOUNCED was last modified: March 27th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
