Official: Gun-toting student no threat

first_imgLANCASTER – A Desert Winds High School student arrested Wednesday on suspicion of bringing a firearm onto school property did not pose an immediate threat to fellow students, a district official said. The Antelope Valley Union High School District official familiar with the case said student Marques Howard, 18, carried a 9mm semiautomatic firearm because he feared for his personal safety in his neighborhood – not on the Lancaster campus where he was arrested. Howard was jailed on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm on school grounds, both misdemeanors. Bail is $50,000. District Assistant Superintendent Tim Azevedo said Howard had no history of causing significant disturbances and hadn’t made threats against students, faculty or staffers. “From what we’ve gathered, there was no intent to cause harm to anyone at the school.” Azevedo said Howard faces disciplinary action from the district, including possible expulsion. Desert Winds is a continuation school. Sheriff’s deputies from Lancaster’s Station School Safety Unit were dispatched to Desert Winds after the district notified authorities that a student was suspected of being in possession of a firearm. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
