Sports bar chain set to make sports betting move

first_img US sports bar and restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings has confirmed to iGamingBusiness.com it is looking to offer sports betting. The chain – also known as B-Dubs – has not offered a timeline on the proposed change, which could shake up the sports betting sector in the US by providing significant cut-through to the public.“As the largest sports bar in America, we believe Buffalo Wild Wings is uniquely positioned to leverage sports gaming to enhance the restaurant experience for our guests,” a company spokesperson told iGamingBusiness.com.“We are actively exploring opportunities, including potential partners, as we evaluate the next steps for our brand.”The chain did not elaborate to iGamingBusiness.com whether those partners would be casinos or other sports betting providers, such as daily fantasy sports operators. With a presence in every US state and more than 44,000 employees, the introduction of sports betting would establish B-Dubs a significant presence, cutting across the country – pending legislative approval in various states, of course. It is anticipated that at least 15 US states will have passed laws to regulate sports betting by the end of next year, with at least 32 states estimated to have approved legislation within five years.B-Dubs, which has suffered a slowdown in sales in recent years, was recently acquired by Roark Capital Group for $2.9bn. Following the takeover, CEO Paul Brown told Business Insider that B-Dubs’ competition had “been a little bit more innovative”.The chain has a track record of pushing promotions around major sports events, such as the ‘March Madness’ college basketball extravaganza and the NFL Draft. However, B-Dubs’ move into allowing gambling would raise numerous questions, not least whether B-Dubs would be able to introduce sports betting at all of its locations, or only those it operates directly.Around half of the chain’s 1,238 outlets are directly owned, with the remainder being franchised. As the doughnut graph shows, 68% of mobile revenues come from betting.Interestingly, while by region Europe takes the bulk of global mobile revenues, Asia/Middle East has a higher percentage of its region’s gross win coming from mobile. This is likely to be due to the fact that in some countries, particularly those in Asia, fixed line broadband was slow to develop and many users skipped desktop altogether and adopted mobile as their first internet device.H2 Gambling Capital is the gambling industry’s leading consulting, market intelligence and data team. William Hill US seals major league first

first_img Email Address AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter The Vegas Golden Knights NHL ice hockey franchise has become the first team from the four established major leagues to secure a partnership with a sportsbook operator by sealing a “multi-year” deal with William Hill US.Under the agreement, William Hill and the team, which is preparing to start its second NHL season on October 4 after entering the league as an expansion franchise last year, will exploit cross-promotional opportunities across various platforms.William Hill’s brand will be advertised on the dasher board of the team’s T-Mobile Arena, as well as the videoboard above the rink during breaks in the play, starting with the Knights’ pre-season clash with the Colorado Avalanche this coming Monday. The two parties will also work together to host fan viewings for away games.Neither the length nor the financial value of the deal was disclosed.“This partnership between a major professional team and a sports book operator is a historic, landmark agreement, and we are delighted to be leading the way with William Hill in this space,” Knights president Kerry Bubolz said.William Hill US chief executive Joseph Asher said in June that the company had been “inundated” with approaches from major US sports teams about sponsorship deals since the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May.Last month, the NBA basketball league entered into a landmark partnership with MGM Resorts International, while earlier this month the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys franchise set a league first by linking up with WinStar World Casino. The NFL relaxed regulations on franchises signing commercial partnerships with casinos ahead of the start of the 2018-19 season two weeks ago, but the league still prohibits teams from promoting sportsbooks. In the NHL, New Jersey Devils president Hugh Weber told Bloomberg TV this week that the team expects to generate commercial revenues of up to $5m per year through gambling-related partnerships, taking advantage of the state’s expanding sports betting market, which generated wagers totalling $95.6m in August alone.“Being the only (NHL) team in New Jersey gives us a huge advantage,” he said. “We see sports betting as additive to the experience for our fans. There’s a lot on the horizon.”Image credit: Michael Miller Marketing & affiliates Vegas Golden Knights NHL team is first major league franchise to strike sportsbook deal Topics: Marketing & affiliates Sports bettingcenter_img Regions: US Nevada William Hill US seals major league first Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter 19th September 2018 | By contenteditorlast_img read more

Unlicensed operators continue to thrive in Portugal

Unlicensed operators continue to thrive in Portugal The head of Portugal’s leading online gambling trade group has called for the authorities to block payments to unlicensed operators after it was found that a significant number of players continue to gamble with illegal sites.A survey commissioned by the Portuguese Association of Online Gambling and Gambling (APAJO) found that 56% of gamblers continue to bet with licensed and unlicensed operators some three years after legal online gambling was introduced. Some 6% of gamblers bet exclusively through illegal websites, while 44% of the total use only sites licensed by the regulator, Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ). Among consumers registered in the first half of this year, almost 70% signed up for licensed platforms only.APAJO president Gabino Oliveira welcomed the usage of licensed sites, but said the authorities need to take a tougher line on offshore operators.“This data shows a very favourable evolution in the growth of the licensed market,” Oliveira said. “This is a positive sign, although we consider in APAJO that much remains to be done to combat unlicensed online gambling in Portugal.“The way to go in combating illegal gambling, beyond supervision, is through effective control and blocking of payments that are made on illegal websites. This is a growing trend in other countries that in Portugal must be properly considered and implemented by the competent entities.”The survey, which was conducted by pollsters Aximage, interviewed more than 600 people who are registered with gambling websites. Of these, some 94% have gambled for money so far in 2019. Based on respondents who have already played in 2019, the reasons for betting with licensed platforms are for 64% that it offers the “highest security”.The survey found that 42% of registrations were completed prior to 2016, the year in which sector regulation came into force, with the remaining 58% of registrations made in subsequent years. In total, 20% of consumers had registered for a gambling account of which 52% were with licensed operators.Based on the poll, Aximage estimates that 62.5% of gamblers spend less than €50 per month on legal online games.Portugal’s regulated online gambling market broke its revenue record for the second consecutive quarter in the three months to June 30, with licenced operators generating a collective total of €48.3m (£44.0m/$53.3m).At the halfway point of the year, Portugal generated more revenue than in the whole of 2018, with the €95.6m reported in the first and second quarter already some way ahead of last year’s overall total of €78.9m.
