KOLKATA: Animal lovers in the city have urged people not to burst fire crackers and throw them at stray animals for their enjoyment during Kali Puja and Diwali.Animal lovers took out a rally in the city on Monday and distributed leaflets requesting people not to burst fire crackers. The animal lovers alleged that some people throw fire crackers at street dogs and get enormous pleasure to see them running for shelter. The poster contains the picture of a stray dog who lost its left eye after some youths threw a fire cracker at him. He bled profusely and finally lost his left eye. Susmita Roy, an animal lover and a spokesman for Love and Care for Animals, said not only the stray dogs even the pet dogs are equally affected by fire crackers. Another dog lover said some days ago two Labradors died of a sudden heart attack after some body threw fire crackers at them when they were taking a stroll in the evening. They said bursting of fire crackers in areas surrounding Alipur zoo affects the animals badly that are in cages. The animals cannot come out and many of them become traumatized. Animal lovers said people should follow the instructions of Supreme Court. Love and Care for Animals that holds classes in schools to create awareness among students appeal to them not to burst fire crackers to give relief to stray and pet animals.
