India vs South Africa: R Aswhin equals Muttiah Muralitharan’s record for fastest to 350 Test wickets

first_imgStar off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler to take 350 wickets in Test matches. Ashwin achieved the feat when he dismissed Theunis de Bruyn to peg South Africa back early on Day 5 of the 1st Test between India and South Africa in Visakhapatnam.Ashwin has taken 66 Tests to reach 350 wickets in Tests. Muttiah Muralitharan, who leads the all-time wicket-taker’s list with 800 wickets, also got to the landmark in his 66th Test.Meanwhile, R Ashwin is also the fastest Indian bowler to get to 350 Test wickets. Anil Kumble, who is India’s leading wicket-taker in Tests with 619 scalps, had previously held the record, having reached the milestone in 77 Tests. Senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had taken 83 wickets to reach the 350 wickets landmark.R Ashwin made a memorable comeback to the Test XI after nearly an year’s absence as he went on to pick up his 27th 5-wicket haul in the 1st innings of the ongoing Test. Ashwin finished with figures of 7/145 — the 5th time he picked up 7 wickets in an innings in Test cricket.Ashwin had also gone past Dale Steyn while tying with James Anderson and Ian Botham on the seventh spot on the list of players with the most 5-wicket hauls in Tests.All-time leading Test wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan (45), Rangana Herath (26) and Anil Kumble (25) are the only other bowlers to have more five-fors in their home countries than Ashwin’s 21.After being out of the Test side for more than a year, Ashwin proved he was ready for the battle as early as his first spell when he removed South Africa opener Aiden Markram with an off-spinner’s delight that hit the top of middle-stump after spinning into the right-hander from outside the off-stump.advertisementAshwin’s delivery to remove a well-set Quinton de Kock, who was batting on 111, showcased the importance of having an experienced bowler in the side. After turning two deliveries away from the left-hander, Ashwin pushed one and made sure de Kock heard the death rattle.Ashwin helped India wrap up the tail on Day 4 by picking up the wickets of Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada only to comeback and strike alongside his spin partner Ravindra Jadeja towards the close of play.Stressing he doesn’t like the time away from the game, R Ashwin came up with a cheeky reply to a reporter’s question during a press conference on Friday.”For starters, I have two kids who don’t sleep….who don’t sleep all that well in nights. Jokes apart, I felt everytime I watched a game on TV, I felt like I wanted to play the game and I was missing out. I mean it’s very natural. I think everybody goes through it. I generally tried to d o a few other things in my life as well. Books, a bit of archaelogy work, stuff like that. I enjoyed it,” Ashwin had said. Also Read | Failure makes you a better batsman: Cheteshwar Pujara on his return to form in Vizag TestAlso See:last_img read more

Ravindra Jadeja best Indian fielder in the last decade: R Sridhar

first_imgTeam India fielding coach R Sridhar, whose contract has been extended by the BCCI, believes Ravindra Jadeja is possibly the best Indian fielder of the decade. It is under the watchful eyes of Sridhar that the team’s fielding has improved dramatically in the recent past. While Sridhar showered praise on Jadeja, he said that an improvement in the ‘mindset’ and ‘fitness’ of the players has been the reason behind India’s dominance in world cricket.”Jaddu’s presence on the field lifts the team’s spirits. He is someone who can keep the opposition on their toes with his fielding. He has an intimidating presence on the field,” Sridhar was quoted as saying by Times of India.”I wouldn’t like to go very far but in the last decade or so Jadeja has been the best fielder India has had,” he added.Speaking about the changes, he said: “The change has been in two areas: mindset and fitness. Changing the mindset is pertaining to what the teams want to achieve, and fitness was a crucial part of that.”The fielding coach said that improving their slip cordon is something that they are looking at.”Developing a pool of players who can field at slip cordon is an area we are working on. In shorter formats, lateral movement and throwing from the deep are the areas we are focusing on as we head into the World T20 next year,” Sridhar said. Also Read | Had information that this was a conspiracy to sabotage India tour: BCB chief on players’ strikeAlso Read | Anil Kumble calls for ‘better facilities for spectators’ to keep Test cricket alive in IndiaAlso See:advertisementlast_img read more
